Important information for your stay abroad

During a study-related stay abroad, you are responsible for your own insurance coverage and compliance with entry regulations. Please make sure that you have sufficient accident, liability and health insurance and inform yourself about the entry and visa regulations of your destination country. Accident, liability and health insurance is not provided by Bielefeld University.

You can also complete your occupational practice studies in an educational institution outside of school. On this page you will find information about possible internship institutions and their contact persons.

There are personal contacts to the institutions mentioned below through staff members of the BiSEd office or Bielefeld University.

Further below you will find information on other internship programs and information exchanges, such as those of the DAAD [German Academic Exchange Service] or the Goethe-Institut.

Note: Although we strive for good contacts to the internship institutions mentioned below, please note that the application for the internship and the implementation are your own responsibility.

Location: Ngorika/Tanzania (near Arusha)

Institution: Pupils home and school

Application possibilities:
- as support in the lessons as well as with the homework support. Assignment in the classes 1-7
- as support of the social worker team in the context of new admissions as well as supervision of the families
- as support of the educator team in the children's home
- workshop organization to different topics: first aid, hygiene, HIV prevention, etc.
- organization of leisure activities

Internshiptimes and project duration: at least 3 months or longer, the interns determine the times themselves. In the months of April, August and December the children are not in the home.

Further information:
Language requirements: business fluent English, as no one on site speaks German. Alternatively: Swahili.
How to Find Us and work visa are to be paid by the interns, board & lodging are free of charge.

Location: Arequipa in the south of Peru

Institution: Daycare/ after-school care for children from 2-14 years old

Internship Opportunity/ Opportunities: Pedagogical and social supervision and support of the children

Further information: Spanish language skills desired (not required), short-term internships of 8 to 12 weeks or long-term internships of 6 months, free room and board for long-term internships

Location: Tunisia (Tunis, Sfax, Nabeul or Sousse) or India (Bangalore)

Institution: Language school for students

Internship Opportunity/ Opportunities:

Conducting German language courses of the levels A1, A2 and B1

  • Independent preparation and follow-up of the courses
  • Ensuring the language quality of each student through individual supervision and targeted support
  • Translation of standardized forms and free texts from French, if possible also from Arabic into German (Tunisia)
  • Translation of standardized forms and free texts from English into German (India)

Further information:
Internship duration: 6 weeks to 6 months; application possible from the fourth bachelor semester on; knowledge of French is an advantage if the internship is to be completed in Tunisia; free accommodation in an internship house; internships are offered by a German educational service provider

Kulturweit: The volunteer service kulturweit offers 6-12 month internships, which are financially supported, in so-called developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America as well as in countries in Central, Southeastern and Eastern Europe. Further information about the program and the application can be found here.

Weltwärts: Weltwärts is a voluntary service program sponsored by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. It is possible to carry out 6-24 month projects in the field of education, health, environment, agriculture or human rights in countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe and Oceania, which are financially supported. Information about the process and application can be found here.

Goethe Institutes: You have the opportunity to apply for an internship in various fields of activity at Goethe Institutes worldwide. These include, for example, program work, language and educational cooperation German, information and library work, and administration. The announcements for internships can be found on the respective pages of the Goethe Institutes.
