The ZiF is Bielefeld University's Institute for Advanced Study and fosters outstanding and innovative interdisciplinary research projects. The ZiF is an independent thematically open research institution and is open to scholars from all disciplines and all countries.

Bielefeld University was founded in 1969 with an explicit research assignment and a mission to provide high-quality research-oriented teaching. With around 24,500 students, the University currently encompasses 14 faculties. As a 'Volluniversitat' (full university), it offers a differentiated range of disciplines in the humanities, natural sciences, technology as well as in medicine.
Bielefeld is a town in northern Germany, located in the nice, hilly surroundings of the Teutoburg Forest. Bielefeld can be reached from any major town by trains running on an hourly schedule (Eurocity train system: marked EC, IC, or ICE on the train schedule).
From Bielefelds main station you can either take a taxi to the ZiF (approx. 10 mins, 15 €) or take the underground tram line 4 (destination Universität or Lohmannshof). From the tram stop Universität or Bültmannshof you can reach the ZiF by walking up the hill behind the main building of the university (see PDF with map). During the day, a Bus goes from Bielefeld main station to the ZiF three times per hour (lines 61 to Werther/Halle or 62 to Borgholzhausen); please get out at the stop Universität/Studentenwohnheim.
