14.-20. August 2023 | Bielefeld, Germany
We would love to hear your feedback about the Behaviour 2023 congress, specifically your experience with our inclusivity measures! Please help us understand how we can make scientific events more inclusive by filling out this post-congress questionnaire. Even if you did not end up attending the congress, e.g. due to visa issues or if you decided to go to another congress instead, please fill out the survey!

Information for participants
Thank you for your participation in our study that assesses experience of the Behaviour 2023 congress. Please read the following information carefully.
Purpose of the study
In this study, we aim to report how participants of the Behaviour 2023 experienced the congress, focussing on the sense of belonging, participation in scientific discussion, and diversity issues to identify barriers for historically underrepresented minorities. The combination of quantitative and qualitative data collected here will be informative and aims to improve the research landscape within Behaviour, Ecology and Evolution by making it more equitable.
Responsible for this study
This study on Inequalities in Congress Experience is carried out by Bielefeld University by the Animal Behaviour, Behavioural Ecology and Evolutionary Biology departments. The responsible researchers for this study are Tuba Rizvi, Öncü Maraci and Rebecca Chen. We are funded by the DAAD project number 57588370, the Behavioural Ecology department at Bielefeld University, and DFG grant HO 5122/14-1 454606304 awarded to Joseph I. Hoffman, respectively.
Study process – what can you expect in this study?
For this part of the study, we conduct a survey to collect data on participant identity, congress experience and participation in question sessions, attitudes towards EDI issues and childcare. The survey is expected to take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You will be asked to answer around 60 questions, some open answer and some multiple choice.
We will you inform you about the data protection-compliant processing of your personal data in the data protection declaration below
Benefits and risks
With your participation you contribute to expanding our knowledge about the current state of diversity among researchers within behavioural, ecological and evolutionary research. This will help us identify which countries, gender and other identities are underrepresented in our scientific fields and what kind of barriers their face at a large, international scientific event. This knowledge will help us construct concrete measures to help mitigate potential inequities.
No remuneration or expense allowance is provided for your participation in this scientific research project. Additionally, there are no negative consequences or special burdens to be expected from participation. The examination does not involve any risks for you, and the results of the survey will only be visible to the Diversity Research Team (the responsible researchers for this study) and will by no means be used against you in any way.
Voluntary Participation
Participation in this study through answering the mentioned questions is completely voluntary. You can stop participating in answering the questions at any time and without giving reasons, without any consequences for you.
Privacy and Data Use
The data collected as part of this study will be treated confidentially. The handling of your personal data is explained in detail in the attached data protection declaration.
The study results are aimed to be summarised in a scientific paper. After the study has been completed, the research data collected will be stored in an anonymized form via a suitable data archive such as Zenodo which will be publicly available. The data will only be published in a form that does not allow any conclusions to be drawn about an individual / specific person at any time. With this approach, the study follows the recommendations of the German Research Foundation for quality assurance in research.
Your data are collected through the survey tool Evasys. The results are accessible by the Diversity Team only. All data will be exported in Excel format and stored at a shared location between the members of the Diversity Team.
This study is pseudo-anonymous as we do not collect personal data, however we cannot exclude the possibility that we can infer a person's identity if the person describes specific features that have also been described in e.g. the registration form for the congress where personal data were collected. Until the end of this session, you have the option of objecting to the storage of your data by cancelling the study. You can do this simply closing the browser window. Your data will then be deleted immediately. After that, it is no longer possible to delete data in a targeted manner, since we store your data in an anonymous form.
