The dissertation aims to contribute to English School (ES) literature by clarifying, from an institutional perspective, how international society and world society interact in a constant state of interplay. This relationship is analyzed through the lens of hybrid primary and secondary institutions, and particularly, international criminal justice and international criminal tribunals. These hybrid institutions encompass both state and non-state actors as constitutive units, along with their respective practices. Observing the interdependence between the pillars of international and world society within this institutional framework enhances the existing literature by measuring the impact of non-state actors as well as their practices on the world order, a dimension that has been largely overlooked until recent contributions. The theoretical and empirical components of this research complement each other, offering a comprehensive analysis of the subject. The pluralist-solidarist debate intrinsic to ES is transcended through the idea that intuitively linking world society to cosmopolitan solidarism, particularly in the context of human rights, confines the discussion to a normative framework, and results in an underappreciation of the impact of non-state actors' practices on the world order. Another contribution to the literature is made through the construction of a bridge between ES and the theory of constitutionalism, and thus between legal and political spheres, always around the interplay of the ‘international’ and ‘world’ pillars. The analysis is further enriched with case studies to examine the practical implications of the theoretical claims.
