Bielefeld Institute for Bioinformatics Infrastructure

We perform research and academic teaching in the area of Service Science. We cooperate with the bioinformatics research groups of the Faculty of Technology and ZB MED, the central, national service centre for professional information and research support in the life sciences.

Our research is motivated by questions as they arise when offering computational services in the life sciences. This includes practical aspects in operating large compute infrastructures, or the integration and processing of big data sets; it also includes conceptual aspects, for example in the development of methodologies for the computational support of life science research. Our research profile thus complements focus areas of ZB MED (intelligent information processing, research data management) and of the Faculty of Technology (bioinformatics, intelligent systems).

One of our goals is to contribute to a knowledge environment for the life sciences, in particular the implementation of a national solution for supplying the life sciences with bioinformatics services.

This scientific unit has yet to be put into function by filling the open professorship. The head of this unit will at the same time be the head of the institute. At the moment, BIBI is temporarily headed by Jens Stoye.
