Equity & Inclusion at CUDE

CUDE is committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for women and non-binary researchers in Economics. We also recognize that diversity goes beyond gender — it includes age, nationality, disability, first-generation academics, diverse cultural and social backgrounds, and unusual career paths. In collaboration with Bielefeld University and the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics, we take concrete steps to increase diversity and ensure that all researchers — current and future — have the resources they need to thrive in academia.

What we offer

  • Mentors & role models: We actively invite female speakers to our workshops, summer schools, and seminars. During their visit, we make an effort to have space for mentoring sessions, career talks, or 1-on-1 meetings with students. In „YWTS Meet & Greet a Female Researcher“, female speakers open up about their career paths including doubts and setbacks but also motivational moments and advise.
  • Networking: Next to the IMW Alumni-Day, CUDE intends to institutionalise an Alumnae-Day where junior researchers can network with experienced researchers in academia and industry. YWTS „Meet & Greet a Female Researcher“ (in collaboration with YWTS) creates valuable opportunities to network with experienced researchers in academia and industry.
  • Travel grants: Women in the CUDE program can apply for additional funds to visit conferences and workshops targeted at females researchers such as at the European Economic Association’s “Women in Economics” (WinE) retreat or events organized by „European Women in Mathematics“.
  • Career support: We financially support coaching measures for career development and scientific networking to help female doctoral researchers navigate the challenges of academia.

CUDE and YWTS Network

CUDE collaborates with Young Women in Theoretical Sciences (YWTS). YWTS Network fosters an interdisciplinary community of female and non-binary researchers across Economics, Mathematics, and Physics. For a master student considering a PhD or a doctoral researcher looking for peer support, the network provides spaces to connect, share experiences, and learn from each other. In that spirit, YWTS hosts a variety of networking events, soft skill workshops, scientific talks, panel discussions, or excursions. Highlights from past events as well as equity news are shared on the YWTS blog.

Current Gender Equality Measures at Bielefeld University

Together with the Bielefeld University and the Faculty of Business Administrations, we make big efforts to support women and non-binary researchers in Economics and to increase the number of female researchers pursuing an academic career:

  • Female Mentoring Programm “movement”: The mentoring program “movement” offers  individual support in career planning and in accessing and developing networks, and also gives insights into the unwritten rules of the academic business. Female (post-)doctoral researchers are encouraged to make use of this program.
  • Equal Opportunity Offices: For the members of the RTG the equal opportunities office at the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics is the first point of call for all issues relating to gender equality. It is complemented and supported by the equal opportunities office of the university.
  • Gender Guest Professorship: Bielefeld University has installed a gender visiting professorship for open to all faculties. With this professorship, the university aims at supporting genderspecific topics in research and education, as well as enhancing the visibility of women in research. The Faculty of Business Administration and Economics hosted this professorship in the winter term 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 (Prof. Agnieszka Rusinowska, Paris School of Economics).
  • Family Friendly University: Supporting the challenges of having a family and a career is a high priority for Bielefeld University. Since 2006 Bielefeld University has been a certified “Familiengerechte Hochschule”. The family service is the point of contact for university members with children and those who have to provide nursing care for family members. RTG members will profit from targeted advice and the provision of childcare offers.
