Equity & Diversity at CUDE

Equity Team

CUDE is committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for women and non-binary researchers in Economics. We also recognize that diversity goes beyond gender — it may include age, nationality, disability, diverse cultural and social backgrounds, e.g. being a first-generation academic, as well as unusual career paths. In collaboration with Bielefeld University and its Faculty of Business Administration and Economics, we actively work on increasing diversity and ensuring that all researchers — current and future — have the resources they need to thrive in academia.

CUDE Equity Measures

  • Mentors & role models: We actively invite female speakers to our workshops, summer schools, and seminars. During their visit, we make an effort to have space for mentoring sessions, career talks, or 1-on-1 meetings with students. In „Meet & Greet a Female Researcher“ (co-organized with the YWTS network), female speakers open up about doubts and setbacks along their career paths, and share motivational moments and advise.
  • Networking: The Meet & Greet series also creates valuable opportunities to network with experienced female researchers. YWTS network lunches and get-togethers for female Economists provide an opportunity to connect with fellow junior researchers as well as professors from Bielefeld University. CUDE intends to institutionalise an Alumnae-Day next to the IMW Alumni-Day where junior researchers can network with experienced researchers in academia and industry.
  • Travel grants: Women in the CUDE program can apply for additional funds to visit conferences and workshops targeted at females researchers such as at the European Economic Association’s “Women in Economics” (WinE) retreat or events organized by „European Women in Mathematics“.
  • Career support: We financially support trainings and coaching sessions for career development to help female doctoral researchers navigate the challenges of academia.

CUDE and YWTS Network

CUDE collaborates with Young Women in Theoretical Sciences (YWTS). YWTS Network fosters an interdisciplinary community of female and non-binary researchers across Economics, Mathematics, and Physics. For a master student considering a PhD or a doctoral researcher looking for peer support, the network provides spaces to connect, share experiences, and learn from each other. In that spirit, YWTS hosts a variety of networking events, soft skill workshops, scientific talks, panel discussions, or excursions. Highlights from past events as well as equity news are shared on the YWTS blog.

Bielefeld University and its Faculty of Business Administration and Economics are offering a broad range of initiatives to enhance diversity and to support women and non-binary researchers. Eligible CUDE members are welcome to approach these initiatives.

  • Female Mentoring Programm “movement”: movement offers individual support in career planning, in accessing and developing networks, and it gives insights into the unwritten rules of the academic business. Female (post-)doctoral researchers in CUDE are encouraged to apply to the movement peer mentoring program.
  • Equal Opportunity Offices: For CUDE members, the first point of call for all issues relating to equity and diversity is the equal opportunities office at the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics (GleiKo Wiwi). It is complemented and supported by the equal opportunities office of Bielefeld university.
  • Gender Guest Professorship: Gender guest professors can be invited by all faculties to promote gender specific topics in research and education and to enhance the visibility of women in academia. The Faculty of Business Administration and Economics hosted this professorship in winter 21/22 (Prof. Sabine Köszegi, TU Vienna) and in winter 22/23 (Prof. Agnieszka Rusinowska, Paris School of Economics).
  • Family Friendly University: To support the challenges of having both a family and a career, Bielefeld University provides childcare support and targeted advice. Familienservice is the point of contact for CUDE members with children and those who provide nursing care for family members. Since 2021, Bielefeld University is certified as family-friendly.
