The aim of the study was to test a European survey on violence against women that is to be conducted by the Fundamental Rights Agency of EU in 2012. The Pilot-/Pre-testing took place in six European Countries; the Interdisciplinary Centre for Women’s and Gender Studies (IFF), University of Bielefeld was one of the six country partners. The study was coordinated by UNICRI (United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute) and the European Institute for Crime Prevention and Control (HEUNI). The test-interviews with additional questions on the survey were carried out in a similar fashion in six EU member states. The purpose was to test the method and the translated survey questionnaire designed for studying violence against women, and to discover the possible problems that arise during the interview. Additional to the 25 pre-test-interviews that were examined in detail 4 focus group discussions were conducted with women of different age groups in order to provide valuable information on how violence and survey questions on violence are understood and comprehended. The final report of the pre-study was documented in July 2011.
